Abstract:

Background: Post-caesarean section mothers are at increased risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) due to immobility, physiological changes, and surgical factors. Educational interventions may improve awareness and preventive practices.
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a video-assisted structured teaching programme (VAST) on knowledge regarding prevention of DVT among post-caesarean mothers in a government maternity hospital, Hyderabad, Telangana.
Methods: A pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design was used. A total of 100 post-caesarean mothers (postoperative day 1–3) were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a self-administered structured questionnaire validated by experts (reliability r = 0.894). After the pre-test, participants received VAST, and a post-test was conducted after 72 hours. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t test, and chi-square test for associations.
Results: In the pre-test, 38% of mothers scored average and none scored above average. In the post-test, 75% scored above average. The mean knowledge score improved from 9.71 (34.67%) in the pre-test to 22.39 (79.96%) in the post-test. The paired t test value was 28.72 (df=99, p<0.001), indicating a highly significant improvement. Knowledge scores were significantly associated with age, education, parity, and mode of delivery.
Conclusion: The video-assisted structured teaching programme was effective in significantly improving knowledge regarding prevention of DVT among post-caesarean mothers. Incorporating such educational interventions in postnatal care can reduce risks and improve maternal outcomes
